Piezo generators
Technology
Piezo generators can be used as a compact source for electrical energy.
As power requirements for microelectronics continue to decrease, alternatives to batteries become feasible. One promising technology is the piezoelectric generator, as it is capable of converting mechanical pressure into electrical energy.
Multilayer generators
Ceramic multilayer generators are built up with a number of thin ceramic layers sandwiched between internal electrodes, resulting in a low output voltage but high current compared to conventional single layer piezoelectric generators.
In certain applications this feature is highly beneficial, due to the required capacitance/impedance match between generator and load. Single layer generators are typically used as spark igniters, utilizing the high output voltage levels.
Example of multilayer generator:
- Multilayer generator size: 5x5x2 mm
- Thickness of active layers: 67 µm
- Applied force: 10 kN
- Generated energy: 12 mJ
- Generated voltage: 400V
Emerging technologies
- High temperature generators
- High capacitance generators
- Bending generators
